The W-Class Yacht Company - Silver SponsorFor the sixth consecutive year we are proud to welcome
the W-Class Yacht Company, LLC. as Silver sponsor of the Antigua Classic
Yacht Regatta. Spearheaded by Donald Tofias, Inspired by the Herreshoff New York 50s, the purpose
of the W-Class is to promulgate intense, satisfying racing among a
fleet of identical yachts with a traditional, aesthetically pleasing
appearance. Modern hull shapes, Three W-46s have been launched since August 2000. These W-Class yachts are 46 feet long, similar in shape and performance to the sleek, already launched 76 footers, Wild Horses and White Wings. The three W-46s, Zebra, Equus and Arion were built by Taylor Allen and John England at Rockport Marine in Rockport, Maine and designed by Bob Stephens, N.A. They are currently based out of Northeast Harbour, Mt. Desert Island, Maine. The naval architect Joel White was commissioned to design the 76ft day-sailer having also built the first yacht Wild Horses at his yard in Brooklin, Maine. The second yacht White Wings was built by Taylor Allen of Rockport Marine. Where else but Maine to build two of the largest wooden yachts in eighty years! After a busy summer 2001 season which included the Americas Cup Jubilee in Cowes I.O.W. both W-76s are based in Palma de Mallorca for the winter and will participate in The Prada Classic Challenge and in the Classic Yacht Regattas in the Mediterranean Summer 2002 Construction is of cold-molded, epoxy-saturated wood and is very light with a low center of gravity that stands up to her powerful sailplan. With the emphasis primarily on racing, the deck and cockpit areas are expansive and the accommodation, though a showpiece of Maine joinerwork is a secondary consideration. These are yachts built to last a lifetime for committed and competitive owners. It is for boats like these that the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta founded the Spirit of Tradition Class and we wish them great success with their venture. |
